ドイツ・ブランデンブルク州の南部にあるラウジッツ地域では褐炭が多く生産され、旧東ドイツのエネルギーを支えていたが、ドイツ統一後は産業が縮小している。2000年代にIBA国際建築博覧会が実施され、産業構造の転換、産業遺構の活用が試みられている。ラウジッツ地域の産業転換は道半ばであり、産業遺構の保存活用には費用面での課題も存在しているとのことだった。視察で訪れた、かつての褐炭採掘地とそこに残置された巨大な表土採掘用のコンベアブリッジ（F60）は、そのスケールを通して東ドイツにおける産業の有り様がどんなものであったかを私たちに伝えている。

The Lausitz region, located in the southern part of Brandenburg, Germany, produced a large amount of lignite coal, which supported the energy supply of the former East Germany, but the industry has been shrinking since the German reunification. The industrial transformation of the Lausitz area is still in its infancy, and there are some cost-related challenges to the preservation and utilization of industrial remains. The former lignite mining site and the huge conveyor bridge (F60) for topsoil mining left there, which we visited during our inspection tour, show us how industry used to be in East Germany through their scale.

ドイツ西部に位置するルール地域は、かつてヨーロッパでも有数の重工業地帯であったが、1980年代以降はIBA（国際建築博覧会）などの都市プロジェクトによって地域の産業構造の転換、自然環境の再生、居住地域の整備が展開されている。19-20世紀初頭にかけて建設された炭鉱、製鉄工場等の産業施設は稼働を停止し、その多くは近代産業遺産として活用されている。巨大なスケールの遺構は地域の近代産業の歴史を伝えるだけでなく、クライミングやアートといった活動の背景としても、この地域のシンボルとして人々に親しまれている。

The Ruhr area, located in western Germany, was once one of the most heavily industrialized regions in Europe, but since the 1980s, urban projects such as the International Building Exhibition (IBA) have been transforming the region's industrial structure, regenerating the natural environment, and developing residential areas. Many of the coal mines, steel mills, and other industrial facilities built in the 19th and early 20th centuries have ceased operations and are now being utilized as modern industrial heritage sites. The massive scale of the remains not only tells the history of modern industry in the region, but also serves as a backdrop for activities such as climbing and art, and is a familiar symbol of the area.

Xinchang ancient town in China / 2024.6
新場古鎮を再び視察した。ちょうど中国では端午節で連休だったので通りはたくさんの人でぎゅうぎゅう状態。ほとんどが上海エリアからの来訪客だそうだ。夕飯どきに訪れる人も多く「連休だし街並みのいい雰囲気のなかで夕飯でも食べようか」という古鎮へのニーズがあるようだった。前回訪れてから1年も経っていないが、町家を改修した店舗が明らかに増え開発スピードの速さを実感する。

I visited Xinchang ancient town again. The streets were packed with people because of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday in China. Most of them were visitors from Shanghai area. It seemed that there were many people who visited the old town during the dinner time, and there seemed to be a need for “Let's have dinner in the nice atmosphere of the town during the consecutive holidays. Although it has been less than a year since my last visit, the number of stores renovated from machiya townhouses is clearly increasing, and I can feel the speed of development.

プロジェクト開始後はじめて研究対象地である新場を視察した。新場は上海中心部からほど近くにある古鎮（鎮は日本でいう村と同程度の規模の行政単位）で、南北に走るストリートとそれに並行・直交する水路に沿って伝統的な町家が立ち並んでいる。コロナ禍を経て客足も戻りつつあるなか、町家のリノベーション工事があちこちで進んでいた。

This was my first visit to Xinchang, the research site since the project began. Xinchang is an old township (a township is an administrative unit about the same size as a village in Japan) located near the center of Shanghai, where traditional townhouses stand side by side along streets running north-south and parallel and orthogonal to waterways. As the number of visitors is returning to the area after the Covid disaster, renovation work on the townhouses is underway here and there.

保土ヶ谷 出窓の家
House with bay window in Hodogaya
横浜市保土ヶ谷の築50年の住宅の建替え。コアを中心に個室を積層させ、それらが居間の吹抜けを介してつながりをもつような構成とした。住宅が面する坂道に面して大きな出窓を設け、新旧の住民が入り交じる住宅地のコミュニティと家族の生活とのインターフェイスとなることを目指した。

Reconstruction of a 50-year-old house in Hodogaya, Yokohama. The house is composed of a core with private rooms stacked around it, which are connected to each other through a living room stairwell. A large bay window facing the slope on which the house sits was designed to serve as an interface between the family life and the residential community, where old and new residents mingle.

Room in Fudomae
築30年のマンションの1室の改修。既存の間仕切りをできるだけ除いて雁行したワンルームとし、新たに加えた収納と建具類を全てシナで制作して帯状に配し、新旧の構成が明示されるなかに家族の居場所を設けた。

Renovation of a room in a 30-year-old condominium. The existing partitions were removed as much as possible to make it a single room, and the newly added storage space and fixtures were all made of linden and arranged in a band to create a family space in which the old and new compositions are clearly expressed.
